I must suggest the "mixer colours" as a main starting point as they all tend to go well together with one another and when blended together make further colours.

yes i am sure they say "Mixer" in brackets under the name of the colour. (I can't find any in my box that are mixers at the minute, typical! lol, this must mean I need to stock up, will have to get some more when I am a work again)

They are colours like magenta and crimson. I'm not sure how many of these there are. But as there is something like 48 colours i am sure there are plenty to pick from.

Hope this is more help

Thomas Very Happy

Thomas..I was going to PM you and then I found this section. Your avatar and all this work is so amazing. People are saying they are going to "buy' stuff to do it..but how do you do it? (Hopefully you haven't explained this in a previous post).

Sincerely,
Terri

How do you do Encaustic Art?

Post by craftytom on Tue 18 Mar 2008, 11:00 pm

Well firstly you need to get the Encaustic Art iron, you do need the proper iron as most travel size irons have a coating over the heat plate. You then need some low heat coloured wax. (I would suggest that you start with the mixer colours). These are all clearly marked on the packagine. You can use these to blend with other colours to make further colours. Finnaly you need the sealed card, this is made pacifically for Encaustic Art. (Please don't try Photo paper as the gloss layer they apply to the paper does melt and can ruin your picture and can mark your iron. Finally get a piece of old cardboard etc to place on your work surface (as melted wax can sometime be hard to remove, As I have learnt!) and Kitchen paper (this is used to help remove any left over wax from your iron).

Now that you have the basic requirements to get started, you can start to create your designs. Plug your Iron in and make sure it is set to the "LOW" setting (we don't need to boil the wax!).

Then when the irons heat plate feels hot (take care) take the block of wax colour that you would like to start with. Lets say for example "Crimson". Using the thin end of the block add it to the heat plate of the iron.

Now what you have to do it add the colour to the sealed card. Hold the iron with the handle (provided) and for the basic technique simply wipe it over the card. You may need to do this several times to cover the card. You can then use this as your base. A good way of creating images is to dab the iron on to the card. By only doing this images can be found by looking closely. (For example I can remember when I first started and I looked at the card and I could be a person, standing on a wave in the sea. Amazing!)

You can more than one colours to the iron at the sametime also to add to the overal affect. This can also be done after apply the wax to the card by going over the colour with another.

When you have finish with your picture, take a piece of Kitchen paper and rub all of the wax. (Don't worry this will not remove the wax from your card. This shines up your work and removed any finger prints that you may have made on the wax. It can make all the difference to the picture.

IMPORTANT NOTE
After you have finished applying a colour to your work it is best to clean your iron with the "Clear Medium" this helps to remove any trace of the wax colour before you add your next colour.

This is only the real basics but there are many different ways you can add to the work.

From Craft Central there are many tools available to assist you in developing your work. These include Rubber Stamps that can be stamped either directly on to the melted wax or with Staz On ink and then have wax put over the top of them. A Stylus tool (electric) this is another electric tool for encaustic that can be used for more detailed work. Various interchangeable ends are available for this, including a mini iron tool to help filling the small gaps that may appear in your work.
To help protect your work Encaustic Art Wax Sealer is available. This can be painted directly over your artwork to prevent any wax from becoming damaged.

I hope this helps anyone wanting to start this great crafting idea. If you have any problems with this please do not hesitate to contact me via "PM" or email.
