Would like to start making cards - help!

Post  Borabo on Mon 01 Dec 2008, 12:07 am

I've been thinking for ages that I would love to start card making but haven't a clue where to start. I watched the crafting channel this afternoon on TV and wouldn't know whether to buy the CD roms or the packages. Then I wouldn't know what tools to buy and most important of all, I want to do it as reasonably as possible as it will only be a hobby, so could someone point me in the right direction please. Would it be an advantage to join the create and craft club?

Hello!!

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find the answers you need on here!

I started by going to Craft Central actually! I bought some peel offs, coloured card and some card blanks, and played around with projects off the internet. Docrafts and Trimcraft are good for inspiration, and are free unlike the Create and Craft Club. I've joined the Create and craft Club too, but I'm disappointed with it, and really don't spend enough to save the fee in discount. It seems to always be more expensive to buy from them than from the manufacturer, eg buying straight from Graphicus etc etc unless they have free P&P. It is good to watch the channel to get practical tips like how to use a heat gun, colouring techniques and use of different products. The kits aren't great, and don't leave you with a lot of creativity, despite what the presenter says. Buying a Trimcraft goodie bag is a good idea, as you get lots of products for £10, that you can use on many projects. Do Crafts do one, but it isn't stocked by Craft Central. It's a bit more expensive, and doesn't have a lot in it. Get on down to a demo at your local store - they're fab!

Hope that helps, PM me if you want to chat

Hi Emma. How useful all the information you gave me and lots of web sites to search too. It was really helpful, particularly about the Create & Craft club because I was thinking of suggesting my son paid for a twelve month subscription as a Christmas present but I don't think I'll bother now. I'll be in touch PM soon. Once again thanks so very much.

Hi Anne,

I too started with a visit to Craft Central. I went to a demo and bought a goody bag and have had so much pleasure from card making.

Try asking in your local craft shop if they have any workshops for beginners or demos you could go to or even get them to advise on the basics.

Some card/envelope blanks, ds tape, scissors, backing papers and a few toppers should be enough to get you going.

Have a look on the gallery on here for some inspiration.

Would also recommend you join other forums like docrafts and trimcraft. There are loads of experienced people who are more than willing to help out and there are galleries to look at.

Hope this helps and good luck with the card making.

Hi Alison. Thanks for your reply with help. There don't appear to be any demo's round here (Hereford), but I've been to see a friend this afternoon who has been cardmaking for a number of years and I gained lots of info., tips on money-saving ideas, what tools I will need to get started types of card and paper, so had a lovely afternoon. I bought a magazine when I was shopping in Morrisons yesterday and it's got quite a good offer. If you pay for 3 monthly issues you get a Joanne Sheen package with C.D's worth £29.95 free so I'm tempted to have a go - what do you think? I'll look into your suggestions as well.
