Supporting the troops...Join in a special card making event

Post  sign off on Tue 29 Jul 2008, 8:35 pm

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in making cards for the troops over in Afganistan? I'll work out the details...but I think this would be a great group who would make some beautiful and thoughtful cards for the service members?

If you are interested.. post below and we'll set a time and I'll get the details together.

Terri
formerly of the Bicester crew...but a CC groupie at heart

Is this for the group that sends cards over for our service men to send to folk back home.
If so i read about this in a craft mag recently and as my husband and many friends of ours are in the forces and serce overseas all to often. I belive this is a great project and yes count me in. I have even been given ideas from those service men as to the types of cards they would love to get there hands on.

Hi What a good idea

What a great idea! I was thinking this would be so a service member could receive a nice card saying we think of them... maybe we could do two... the first one to send them a card just because we are thinking of them and the second to send cards to send back (could you get that info?)

So we now have two!

I will trawl through my magazines tonight to see if I can find the info and I shall pass it on.
My Husband thought it was a great idea. As when out there Family is the thing they think of most but when its mums B,day or other event they cant just go to a store and buy a card to send home, yes they have letters home known as blueys but it would be great to be able to send card to family and friends.
chat later

count me in.

Someone on one of the shopping channels read an email out from someone who sends cards to troops for them to send home to their loved ones. I would certainly be interested in this, and the idea of sending a card of support to them including one to send home to loved ones sounds like a great combination of the two ideas.

Another thought, what about cards for the injured troops who have come back home but have been injured in the line of duty? I am interested in this side of things as a colleague of my husbands took part in the Help for Heroes Big Battlefield Bike ride earlier in the year to raise funds for them. Looking at the information when I sponsored him really made me think how these guys need to know how much their sacrifices are appreciated regardless of whether we feel they should be fighting or not.

Can I just say as the wife of a service man I am so greatful that there are people out there who really seem to appreciate all that these men do. We always feel that in america there is such love for all those who work in the services be it the Army, Fire whatever but here in the uk the sacrafices they make seem to go un noticed. It is a life that makes you part of something greater giving you so many friends that seem to become extended family but out side of that people just dont seem to understand. It is the hardest thing to say goodbye to your husband and keep your spirits high for him but wondering if you will be together again, wondering when he will get to see his newborn child or see the first steps etc. Apart from putting there life on the line there are so many other sacrafices they make.
Views are starting to change and folk like you warm my heart and like the lady who stopped us on the train the other day when my husband was in uniform to say 'well done and thank you for all you do'. I would like to say THANK YOU for your support and understanding.

As Bod said if we could also do something for the injured that would be fantastic. Of course my husband and myself are very proud to wear our HELP FOR HEROS wrist bands.

Thanks guys and I am still looking for that info.

My family are/were Navy and Air force so I would be interested in knowing if this is for all forces or just Army. It would be a great way for people to make cards for people they don’t normally make for, like children (no one in my family/friends have little children anymore) or to try styles they know are not to their family/friends taste.
Would there be anyway of involving C C say as a drop off/collection point? The money we save on postage could go towards making more cards

I found it! Its in issue 48 june papercraft inspirations page 53 if any one has a copy.
Blank cards are sent to
cards for the troops,
John Govier's late night radio show,
PO box 1034,
Plymouth
The cards are distributed among all serving military personnel. No location is left out or favoured and the cards are available to those in the army, airforce, navy and the red cross.
Thats the main information but I am sure there is more info out there if you look for it.
Of course however they get the cards I am sure the troops will be greatful.
Just passing on the info I had seen about this, hope it helps. x

Who would we ask at CC to get permission to be a collection point and how would we get the cards to the forces at the best cost?
I know a member of the Marie Curie charity used to collect from craft centres, wonder if something similar is working?
